The area was once marshland, and the River Walbrook (which is now largely underground) flowed through its streets. Hoxton was also once a marshland, and eventually became a popular leisure area for city dwellers. Hoxton has a turbulent history - it was in Hoxton Fields in 1598 that playwright Ben Jonson killed actor Gabriel Spencer in a fatal dual, and in Hoxton in 1605 that Lord Montegale discovered a letter warning him of the now-infamous Gunpowder Plot.
