Discoveries on Hampstead Heath, such as Mesolithic flint tools, postholes, and burnt stones, are evidence that there were hunter-gatherer communities in Hampstead as far back as 7000 BCE. Belsize Park's history stretches back to 1317, its name meaning "well situated" in old French. For centuries, it remained largely farmland, but when its Manor House was rebuilt in 1663, the gardens were opened to the public, providing leisure space for city-dwellers to enjoy concerts, fishing and country dances.
