Putney's roots stretch back to the Roman era. Its name originates from the Anglo-Saxon "Puttan hythe" meaning the landing place for Putta, who may have been the first Bishop of Hereford, appointed in the year 676. Nestled in a loop of the Thames, Barnes also has a rich history. Its oldest Church, St Mary's dates back to the Norman times, and was dedicated by the Archbishop of Canterbury just after the signing of the Magna Carter was confirmed.
Nowadays these two neighbouring water-side communities are full of green spaces, but there is also plenty to do if you are a music fanatic! In fact, the Olympic Studio cinema in Barnes was once a recording studio, frequented by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Jimi Hendrix, Queen and David Bowie. Legend goes that it was in this little studio in Barnes that the Beatles began composing All You Need is Love! Rock 'n' roll music can be seen live at the Half Moon in Putney, whilst the Bull's Head is a brilliant spot for live jazz nights.
