Piano soundboard, iron frame and bass strings through piano's bottom door

Behind the iron frame of your piano is a thin piece of wood called the ‘Soundboard’. The piano’s soundboard is effectively its natural boombox - it’s where the sound of the strings resonate, up and out towards our ears.

This beautiful old Berry piano has survived a flood, and sadly, it’s soundboard has cracked. The result is a strange buzzing noise when playing certain notes of the piano, caused by the separated pieces of soundboard resonating against each other.

However this doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road for this Berry! I was able to quickly diagnose the problem, and secure the soundboard to the plinths on the back of the piano - stopping the buzzing noise.

Whilst this piano isn’t quite good-as-new, the piano was restored to working order, giving plenty of future life to a beloved family instrument! Many piano tuners also do repair work and regulation. If you'd like to know more about your piano, contact a piano tuner near you.
